What do Advisory PVG do?
Advisory PVG, based in East Lothian in Scotland, has been registered since 2011 as an Umbrella Body with Disclosure Scotland. Protecting Vulnerable Group (PVG) checks were introduced in March 2011, to help ensure that those who have regular contact with children and protected adults through paid and unpaid work do not have a known history of harmful behaviour.
Companies & organisations
We provide guidance to companies & organisations on Protecting Vulnerable Groups checks, can countersign applications for employers, and can do this for companies and organisations throughout Scotland and beyond.
Individuals
We can provide guidance for individuals, along with the necessary application form and written guidance, so a PVG check can be requested.
What does the check involve?
Disclosure Scotland carry out a check to confirm the individual is not barred from working with children and/or protected adults. If the individual is barred, PVG Scheme Membership will be refused. This means the individual cannot work with the workforce he/she is barred with (subject to certain exceptions). A search will also be carried out to check for vetting information (e.g. convictions, cautions, children’s hearing findings, other relevant information from the police). If any vetting information identifies conduct which has a bearing on the individual's suitability to do regulated work, application for PVG Scheme Membership will be considered by Protection Services.
All PVG Scheme Members are subject to ongoing monitoring (continuous updating). This means that every PVG Scheme Member has their vetting information kept up-to-date, and if there is new information, this will be assessed to determine if this makes the individual unsuitable to do regulated work with children and/or protected adults.
There are 2 types of PVG check :
1. Scheme Membership Record check (or update check) - is available to people in anticipation of taking up regulated work, either on a self employed basis, or with a personal employer wishing to confirm that an individual is a scheme member and so is not barred. This type can be applied for by any individual, including for self employment, to show to current or potential clients/families. Some employers are willing to accept this type of check for a job with a company or organisation, but whether this type is acceptable would have to be confirmed by the employer before applying.
Disclosure Scotland carry out the checks detailed above, and if the individual is not barred, or under consideration for barring, for the groups applied for, the PVG certificate is issued to the individual at the current home address given on the PVG application form. This type of check is also the one that can be requested by a personal employer e.g. a family employing a nanny, or a person employing a carer. Please see the Personal Employers tab.
2. Scheme Record check (or update check) - for an employee of a company or organisation where the job requires a PVG check to be completed. This type of check is arranged by the employer, as it needs to be countersigned prior to sending to Disclosure Scotland to carry out the checks detailed above. If the employee is not barred, or under consideration for barring, for the groups applied for, the PVG certificate is issued to the individual at the current home address given on the PVG application form. The company or organisation also receives a copy, or one is sent via an Umbrella Body who has countersigned the application on their behalf.
